Hello May !

May in the Pacific NW- have every kind of weather in just one day.

We’ve had some warmer temperatures this month and the plants are getting quite large. We have so many budded plants so don’t wait too long to place your order. It’s Mother’s Day this weekend and we have gift certificates available HERE for any last minutes gifts. I can process the email gift certificates very quickly.

Hydrangea Serrata Tiara

I’ve had some questions about hydrangeas not leafing out as normal. Hydrangeas can be slow to leaf out after a hard freeze, especially if it occurred in April when plants were just waking up. This is particularly true for bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla), which are more susceptible to frost damage due to their early budding.

If your hydrangea hasn't shown signs of life yet, here's how to check its condition:

Gently scratch the bark near the base of the stems. If you see green tissue beneath, the plant is still alive. Even if the upper branches are damaged, hydrangeas often sprout new growth from the base, so there's still hope for recovery.

It's advisable to wait until June before pruning hydrangeas that haven't leafed out. Pruning too early can expose the plant to further frost damage if temperatures drop again. Once you're certain the risk of frost has passed, prune back any dead or damaged stems to healthy, green tissue. This will encourage new growth and help the plant recover.

To encourage recovery, ensure the plant receives adequate water, especially if the weather has been dry. Hydrangeas prefer consistently moist soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Once new growth appears, you can apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support healthy development.
